  • Fields of Fame

  • Place boards in centre of table:

    • Shuffle tiles and place next to game board
    • Place 3 tiles face up on offering spaces
  • Shuffle quest tiles and place near game board
  • Shuffle Jarl cards and place face down on lower card space of Township board
  • Randomly place 4 reputation tiles face up on spaces to right of Mead Hall
  • Randomly place 3 townsfolk cards face up in spaces to left of Mead Hall:
    • Cards in these spaces are always placed from left to right
  • Randomly draw required number of plunder/Valkyrie tokens for each plunder set space on settlement spaces
  • Place remaining plunder/Valkyrie tokens near board to form supply
  • Place white/grey workers on raid spaces as marked
  • Place black workers on following spaces in village:
    • Gate House
    • Town Hall
    • Treasury
  • Place silver/provisions near game board
  • Each player receives:
    • 1 player board
    • 1 encounter board
    • 2 silver
    • 1 black worker marker
    • 1 ship card in their chosen colour
    • 5 townsfolk cards:
      • Players choose 1 card to hire for free, keeping the card face down at this time
      • Players then pass 1 card to the player on their right and one to the player on their left
      • Players then reveal the card they hired for free
      • All players will now have 4 cards, 2 they were dealt and 2 that were given to them by other players
  • Place score markers for each player on each of following:
    • Armour track
    • Valkyrie track
    • Victory point track
    • Fame track
  • Roll red dice to determine starting player

The game is played in a series of turns, going clockwise starting with the start player.

On your turn, you will do the following two things:

  • Place the worker marker you have on an empty location space and, optionally, resolve its action
  • Pick up a different worker marker from an already occupied space and, optionally, resolve its action

You will always start your turn with a worker marker and will always finish your turn with a worker marker.

The following limits should be checked at the end of your turn:

  • 8 cards in your hand
  • 8 mead

The game end is triggered when one of the following conditions is met:

  • Only 1 fortress raid remains on the board
  • All Valkyrie are removed from the board
  • All offerings have been made

The player that triggered the game end completes their turn, then all players take one more turn.

Final scoring then commences.

All players score the following:

  • Victory points shown next to their space of Valkyrie Track
  • Victory points shown next to their space of Armour Track
  • Victory points shown on their offering tiles
  • Victory points shown on any crew member cards
  • Victory points shown below the right-most quest/reputation tile above player board
  • 1 point for each gold they have
  • 1 point for each iron they have
  • 1 point for each 2 livestock they have, rounding down

The player with the most victory points wins!

Tiebreakers:

  • Furthest along Valkyrie track
  • Furthest along Armour track

Otherwise, the victory is shared

When doing a raid, this will take both actions of your turn to perform. To carry out a raid, you must have the following:

  • A large enough crew
  • Enough provisions and gold
  • The required worker colour

These requirements are shown on settlement space.

To carry out a raid:

  • Place worker on settlement space
  • Pay required provisions/gold
  • Spend mead to increases your military strength:
    • This must be spent before you roll dice
  • Roll number of red dice shown on settlement space
  • Gain victory points based on military strength:
    • This value is a sum of:
      • Rolled dice values
      • Hired Crew Strength
      • Hired Crew Actions
      • Armour:
        • This is not spent during a raid
      • Mead:
        • Increase strength by 1 for each mead spent on this raid
  • Receive additional victory points from hired crew
  • Receive fame if you exceeded the raid's required military strength:
    • 4+ points: 1 fame
    • 8+ points: 2 fame
    • 12+ points: 3 fame
  • Pick up new worker and one set of plunder on settlement space
  • Resolve any Jarl actions:
    • For each Jarl token taken, turn over one card of Jarl draw pile
    • With all Jarls revealed, for each Jarl you must choose to do one of the following things:
      • Kill it
      • Subdue it
      • Flee from it
    • Once you have decided which of the above to do for each Jarl, you must then resolve the encounters:
      • First, kill all Jarls you decided to kill:
        • Take wounds equal to the Jarl's military strength + 1:
          • Each crew member can take 1 wound for each military strength they have:
            • For each wound taken, reduce their military strength by 1
          • Crew members with 0 military strength cannot take any more wounds
          • Crew members cannot die from taking wounds
        • Do the action shown on the bottom right of the Jarl card
        • Increase fame by 2 for each kill
        • Discard each killed Jarl
      • Second, subdue any Jarls you decided to subdue:
        • Take wounds equal to the Jarl's military strength - 1:
          • Each crew member can take 1 wound for each military strength they have:
            • For each wound taken, reduce their military strength by 1
          • Crew members with 0 military strength cannot take any more wounds
          • Crew members cannot die from taking wounds
        • Pay silver cost shown on Jarl card
        • Take Jarl card into your crew
        • Subdued Jarls cannot take wounds or be targeted by Valkyrie on same turn they were taken
        • Jarls can never be added to a player's hand by any effect (e.g. by using a Gravedigger)
      • Finally, flee from any Jarls you do not wish to kill or subdue:
        • Lose 1 fame or 1 victory point for each Jarl you flee from
        • If you cannot kill or subdue a Jarl, you must flee from it
  • Resolve any Valkyrie actions:
    • For each Valkyrie token taken:
      • Discard 1 crew member:
        • Some members allow an action to be performed if killed during a raid
        • Any wounds on the crew member are returned to the supply
      • Move score marker 1 space up Valkyrie track
      • Return the Valkyrie token to the main supply

  • Draw 2 cards from the townsfolk draw pile
  • If you have more than 8 cards at the end of the action, discard cards down to 8

  • Play 1 card from your hand, resolving the effect in the bottom right corner of the card

  • Do one of the following:

      • Pick offering tile up and place face down in front of you
      • Victory points for this tile are scored at the end of the game
